What is Spectroscopy?

Spectroscopy is the branch of Science that studies the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter (sample under study).

Spectroscopy involves the separation of light (white light, for visible range) into its constituent wavelengths (monochromatic light), which is done through a diffraction grating (the same way a prism turns white light into a rainbow).

The monochromatic light is then detected by an optical sensor and transformed into graphic information in the form of a spectrum. The graphic spectrum shows the relation of intensity vs wavelength and with the interpretation of the results it's possible to obtain qualitative and/or quantitative information about our sample.
